In 2020, I worked on a documentary for L.A based company Solo Pierre.
The documentary was about the life of 18th U.S President Ulysses S. Grant.
They required History channel style ‘Battle Maps’ to show how major battles of the American Civil War played out.

I was also tasked with editing the documentary, and creating the intro sequence. For the documentary they supplied drone footage they had shot at key locations, images, illustrations, V.O and music along with a script so it was my job to “tie it all together” with a style fitting of that era.
I first assembled mood boards and rough ‘previsualisation’ renders to communicate my ideas and then had to deliver sequences to tight, weekly deadlines so it was important to find the right balance of Quality vs Quantity.
The animations had to be 100% historically accurate so also involved quite a lot of research from various sources to get a clear picture/understanding of the battles.
The main reference to work to was the animations for the History Channel’s “The Battle Of Midway”: a 3D map with 3D units moving around them and 2D infographics to show the General’s involved.
I used real world heightmaps of the battlefields, generated 3D models using Photoshop’s Atlas plug-in and then sent the models to AE. They were textured with modified high resolution illustrations of the battlefield.
